Mechanical Engineer

Job Description

MECHANICAL ENGINEER, Laboratory for Nuclear Science, to join our research group at the European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN) in Geneva, Switzerland to work on developing and integrating the Endcap Timing Layer (ETL) detector for the Phase II upgrade of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment. The ETL is an innovative silicon detector that utilizes an evaporative CO₂ cooling system for thermal management. Collaborate closely with mechanical engineers at MIT and CERN to integrate the ETL mechanical structure into the CMS environment; contribute to the definition, design, and testing of the ETL internal cooling system and internal service distribution; work with collaborating institutes, CMS Integration Office, and Technical Coordination to define detailed detector assembly, testing, and installation plans; conceptualize, coordinate, and significantly contribute to large-scale detector construction projects and smaller supporting projects; provide technical direction for the development and integration of key project components; perform expert-level solid modeling and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) for mechanical systems; travel to meetings, vendor sites, and equipment installation locations as required (less than 10%).

Job Requirements:

REQUIRED: Master’s degree in Engineering and a minimum of five years of experience in mechanical design and manufacturing; proficiency in designing equipment and overseeing the fabrication of complex components; ability to write clear procedures, document test results, and present findings for team review; proven ability to master and contribute to complex engineering projects under tight schedules; experience in modeling CAD assemblies and conducting thermal and structural analysis/simulations; expertise with 3D modeling tools and FEA for electro-mechanical design; hands-on experience in the fabrication, assembly, and testing of complex mechanical systems; familiarity with machine shop operations; strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills; self-motivation and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks simultaneously. Ph.D. in Engineering or Physics, experience with CO₂ cooling systems. background in detector instrumentation, experience designing, producing, and implementing complex detector systems for physics experiments, prior experience working at CERN or similar scientific laboratories, preferred.
