Essential Job Duties

The Library Coordinator serves a specialized role within the African American Cultural Center, providing library and information services tailored to the needs of an NC State affiliate library. The library’s collection emphasizes Black diasporic thought, scholarship, and innovation.

Core Responsibilities:
  • Oversee daily library operations, including circulation, collection development, and maintenance.
  • Provide information services such as reference support, research assistance, and technology training for students, faculty, and the public.
  • Facilitate access to print and digital collections, technology lending, and reserve materials.
  • Supervise and develop student workers and volunteers, including recruitment, training, and performance management.
  • Plan and deliver outcome-based programs and events aligned with the Cultural Center’s mission, vision, and values.
  • Curate and acquire collections with a focus on Black, African, and African American history, literature, and scholarship.
  • Maintain and organize library systems, databases, and archives in a networked environment.

Additional Duties:
  • Serve as a primary contact for the library and engage with a varied patron base, including students, researchers, and vendors.
  • Create and maintain records for information storage and retrieval.
  • Conduct basic research and assist with queries, drawing from both physical and digital resources.
  • Support operations and services through the preparation, evaluation, and organization of collections.
  • Develop outreach initiatives to highlight special collections and relevant resources.

Qualifications:
  • Proficiency in library technologies and systems for organizing and retrieving information.
  • Familiarity with the histories, narratives, and cultures of the African diaspora.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively and independently.
  • Experience in program development and the supervision of student workers.

This position emphasizes effective communication, adherence to library standards, and the use of current technologies to engage a wide variety of patrons and enhance library services.

Minimum Experience/Education

High school diploma or equivalency and two years of experience in library services, office support, or related field; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Experience in general reference and public information work
  • Ability to function as a self-directed leader in a growing department of a larger office
  • Ability to determine departmental needs and submit a process to fulfill those needs in a timely manner
  • Proficiency with computers and software
  • Proficiency providing reference services using print and electronic sources
  • Basic cataloging ability and experience in collection development
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and project management skills with the ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively both as a team member and independently
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills with sensitivities to providing excellent customer services for a varied environment and student body
  • Program development and implementation experience
  • Presentation and/or facilitation experience
  • Ability to plan, direct, and supervise the work of library work-study students and other personnel
