Department of Molecular and Structural BiochemistryAbout the Department
The fundamental mission of the Department of Molecular and Structural Biochemistry at NC State University is the discovery and dissemination of new knowledge through original and innovative research, instruction, and outreach. The department promotes a culture of interdisciplinary team research, through which we strive to achieve the goals of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) to solve grand challenges in food security, environmental stewardship, sustainability in agriculture and energy, and human health.
Teaching in the department balances an interdependence of formal classroom instruction with laboratory instruction and experience in research methods. Classroom instruction and laboratory research incorporate a variety of model organisms to examine all levels of biological organization from the atomic/molecular to the organismal. We maintain a high quality undergraduate bachelors degree program, and rigorous masters and doctoral graduate programs.

Essential Job Duties
The Department of Molecular and Structural Biochemistry at North Carolina State University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position, at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, in the broad area of plant molecular biology and biochemistry. The position will be 80% research and 20% teaching, which is a typical split for primarily research programs in the department.
The successful candidate will be expected to develop a vigorous and independently funded research program centered on transformative research in plant molecular biology and biochemistry. Aspects of research may include metabolic regulation in response to physiological stress (primary and secondary metabolism), maintenance of homeostasis, transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulation, post-translational modification and protein stability, regulation of protein activity and location, and epigenetic changes. Preference will be given to applicants examining molecular mechanisms using a range of approaches including and not limited to computational modeling, systems level experimental molecular biology, quantitative analytical and macromolecular structure determination, and translational research in crop plants.
This position will have opportunities to collaborate with biochemistry faculty who have expertise in plant abiotic and biotic stress responses in crop plants and plant model systems, as well as the numerous research programs in plant biology that are focused on plant stress responses at the metabolic level, including programs in Plant and Microbial Biology, Crop and Soil Sciences, Horticulture, Entomology and Plant Pathology, Forestry, and the Plants for Human Health Institute. The position will complement and benefit from the newly launched Plant Science Initiative, an innovative multidisciplinary systems-oriented research center that will become the headquarters for solutions to global challenges in agriculture.
The successful candidate will be expected to foster an environment that is respectful and welcoming of all individuals. Review of applications will begin December 1, 2024, and will continue until the position is filled. The target start date is August 2025, but a mutually beneficial time may be negotiated.
