As part of our continued commitment to innovation and security, we are seeking a highly skilled Assistant Director for Information Technology Security to help protect our digital infrastructure and ensure the safety of our college’s data and systems. This role is key to ensuring the College remains proactive in preventing cybersecurity incidents and compliant with industry standards. The Assistant Director will collaborate with internal teams, the SUNY system, and external vendors to continually strengthen our security posture. This position will report to the Chief Information Officer (CIO).

This Assistant Director will serve as a lead network/security/IoT architect at the College responsible for protecting against cyber threats and for security of Infrastructure and Administrative services provided by Office of Information Technology. This Assistant Director will work with department management and other stakeholders to gather requirements, design, implement, and maintain the security and network related infrastructure of the organization according to industry best practices and security standards. Serves as a senior-level administrator for centralized systems and networks using advanced technologies to deploy and monitor IT services and respond to security incidents.

This position is responsible for maintaining contact with the College community, SUNY-wide programs that provide services to the College as well as vendors for products and services relating to information technology at the College. This position will also collaborate with the CIO in long-term planning, analysis, and design of systems and services to meet the needs addressed by the senior management of the College.

Typical Work Activities
    • Performs risk assessment, audits, and security monitoring functions for networks and systems.
    • Administers related systems to perform intrusion detection/prevention, packet monitoring, file/database integrity assessments, vulnerability assessments, and incident tracking.
    • Monitors security systems, analyze security logs, and respond promptly to security incidents, conducting thorough investigations and implementing remediation measures.
    • Prepare and present regular reports on the College’s security posture to College leadership, including metrics on vulnerabilities, incidents, and compliance status.
    • Works with management, legal counsel, and law enforcement to respond to security incidents and requests for data/right-to-know.
    • Reviews changes to firewall/network/and other infrastructure and approves or denies them.
    • Design and architect secure network, security, and IoT infrastructure, including switches, routers, access points, firewalls, intrusion detection and prevention systems, VPNs, door locks, cameras, card systems, NAC, monitoring, compliance, EDR, and other security technologies.
    • Develop and implement security strategies, compliance strategies, policies, and procedures to protect the organization’s network infrastructure, systems, and data from internal and external threats.
    • Assist in the development and execution of incident response plans, ensuring that the College is prepared to handle cybersecurity incidents effectively.
    • Evaluate and select network, security, and IoT products and technologies and provide guidance on their integration into the existing network infrastructure, includes working with vendors to design solution, obtain quotes as needed, and then develop RFP/Bid documents to purchase solutions.
    • Documents solutions and communicates effectively with supervisor.
    • Administers IT security and network practices for the College – auditing existing systems, firewalls, Microsoft Office 365, and networks, working within OIT and committees to develop, document, and maintain security policies and procedures.
    • Performs senior-level system and network administration for large-scale infrastructure systems.
    • Develops and maintains advanced, senior-level knowledge of technologies and methods utilized by OIT.
    • Serves as the primary OIT consultant for IT network, security, and IoT implementations of new technical projects.
    • Participate in conferences, meetings, and groups in higher education (such as EDUCAUSE) and SUNY-wide programs (such as ITECCPD, and OAS) and SUNY conferences (such as Wizards, CIT, and STC).
    • Serve on College committees as assigned representing the Office of Information Technology Services.
    • Provide training/mentorship for lower-level OIT employees when necessary.
    • Develop and deliver cybersecurity training programs to educate staff and faculty on security best practices and threat awareness.
    • Assist other OIT areas with providing technical services to the College community.
    • Performs other duties as assigned by the Chief Information Officer.

 

 
Required Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:
  • Strong level of understanding of network protocols, IT Security, and operating systems.
  • Ability to independently research, deploy, and administer advanced hardware and software for security assessments dealing with very low-level technical details.
  • Ability to judge the nature and severity of an event and take appropriate action.
  • Understanding of laws and the legal system; including handling of evidence concerning digital records and cybersecurity.
  • Detailed knowledge of best practices for network/security/IoT design.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of compliance mandates required by the College, and ability to factor them into network/security design.
  • Detailed knowledge of effective system and network administration practices and related auditing tools.
  • Ability to effectively communicate complex security issues and concepts to audiences with varied technical backgrounds.
Essential Functions
Must be able to communicate verbally and in writing with College community, SUNY-wide Program organizations, and vendors; must be able to operate computer and network systems; must be able to work in confined spaces, climb ladders, and lift and move 30 to 40 lb. components; must be able to navigate relationships with diverse populations; must be able to relate with students, faculty, staff and administrators of the College.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Cybersecurity or related technical field; two (2) years of IT experience using a variety of systems and tools with a demonstrated increase in levels of responsibility OR
  • Bachelor’s degree; four (4) years of IT experience using a variety of systems and tools with a demonstrated increase in levels of responsibility, technical work experience in a multiple server/network infrastructure environment, and experience managing the implementation of information technology systems;
Desirable Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Cybersecurity or related field;
  • CISSPCISMCCSP and/or PMP certifications or equivalents;
  • Experience working with technology infrastructure used or supported in an educational setting, preferably in higher education;
  • Experience with technology infrastructure products such as operating systems with support utilities (e.g., LINUX, Microsoft, VMware), networking architecture (routers, firewalls, packet shapers, VLANS, etc.), and typical technology implementation services for higher education such as SIS, library systems and CMS/LMS; experience teaching in higher education.
