Description
The Instructional Designer/Technologist (ID/T) advises, guides, and mentors faculty in the design of engaging, functional, and effective instructional materials for all delivery modalities. Working in a team environment, applying the College’s instructional systems processes and procedures, the ID/T recommends best practices for instructional issues such as sequencing of materials, use of assessments, selection and structuring of learning activities, and interface design. The ID/T directs and participates in the development of instructional materials. Using national quality standards, the ID/T evaluates the effectiveness of course materials, and consults with faculty to make improvements. Using course review results, the ID/T assists faculty with planning and implementing course improvement. He or she plans and delivers training to faculty, (and sometimes to staff and students) on pedagogical and technological topics, and continually explores new technologies for potential application to instructional problems. The ID/T provides instructional design expertise as needed to institutional committees and policy makers. The ID/T oversees the operations of the College’s video production studio, HyFlex classrooms, and remote site installations. Working with faculty, staff, and community partners, they aid in the development of video content for delivery through multiple modalities of instruction. Additionally, the ID/T manages Chesapeake College’s learning management system support tickets, provides orientation, training, and technical assistance to faculty and students in online and web-enhanced courses during business and some extended hours. As co-administrator of the College’s online learning software, they help implement course and student uploads at the beginning of each semester and ensures course/section readiness for each semester.
Examples of Duties
- Apply pedagogical knowledge and design process to produce effective instructional products. This may involve use of software to create and manipulate graphics, images, audio, and/or video.
- Use e-learning evaluation tool results and course assessment results to consult with faculty to create and implement course improvement.
- Identify effective solutions to instructional problems based on assessment data, review using the of the college’s approved quality guidelines and standards for e-learning courses.
- Use appropriate software tools for course design and audio-visual production.
- Lead collaborative, cross-functional project teams
- Work with faculty to design and develop effective courses and learning materials for use in various modalities.
- Work with faculty to identify and analyze course delivery problems and provide alternative solutions.
- Advise faculty on the use of instructional technology tools in the delivery of instruction.
- Oversee use of video production studio, HyFlex classrooms, and remote site partnerships.
- Plan, develop, and teach faculty professional development workshops and self-paced training options in areas of pedagogy and technology.
- Create tutorials, online courses, and other resources for orienting students to the college’s learning management system and assisting them to use it effectively.
- Assist with the administration of the college's learning management system. This may include development and organization of course materials within the LMS
- Manage the online learning helpdesk phone and email support function, responding in a timely fashion to student and faculty questions about the LMS and related issues.
- Coordinate with the LMS provider’s support team to resolve issues.
- Maintain awareness of emerging technologies and their appropriate applications in online, blended and technology-enhanced settings.
- Research and recommend educational best practices, instructional resources, instructional technologies, and multimedia hardware/software to support teaching and learning.
- Assist the department in planning for future educational technology needs by preparing proposals and technology needs assessments.
- Supervise interns, work study students, or temporary employees focused on specific educational technology projects.

Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in instructional design, instructional technology, education or other related field.
- At least two (2) years of experience working in the instructional design/technology field.
- Fluency with web-based course management tools (Canvas preferred). Experience working in a community college setting is preferred. Experience teaching preferred.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience working with video production software (Camtasia preferred).
- Experience with HyFlex teaching modality and equipment.
- Experience working on college and community partnership projects.
Supplemental Information
- Most of the job is sedentary, however, occasional periods of light work may be required;
- Lifting up to approximately 35 lbs. occasionally.
