Job Description:
Westchester Community College's English Department has two full-time, tenure-track positions open for instructors to teach writing, with a special emphasis on developmental and gateway courses (especially ENG 101). The successful candidates will be expected to hold office hours, to participate in assessment activities, and to support the mission of the College and the department, participating and collaborating in departmental and College activities and initiatives.
Requirements:
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: A Master's Degree in English or Composition and Rhetoric, along with at least one year of college-level teaching experience, is required. Working knowledge of developments in the profession and the ability to put research and theory in composition/rhetoric and developmental education into practice is also required, as well as the ability to integrate new technologies and media into teaching and learning.
All candidates must have evidence of responsiveness to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: A doctorate in English or Composition and Rhetoric, evidence of at least 3 years of teaching college level English, specifically writing-intensive classes, and research/scholarship are strongly preferred. Preferred candidates will also show evidence of the capability to:
- Assess student learning through demonstrated reflective practice (including ongoing formative assessments, as well as official departmental assessment);
- Manage classes and learning environments by presenting information in a way that is inclusive to all learners; and
- Support learning through student engagement, incorporating pedagogical strategies such as active learning, authentic and problem-based activities, and other successful teaching strategies into classroom instruction.

POSITION EFFECTIVE: Fall 2025
SALARY & BENEFITS: The starting salary is $75,170. Additional compensation with seniority steps maximize at a salary of $88,234. Benefits include comprehensive health coverage, a choice of defined benefit and/or defined contribution pension plan, generous leave benefits, and access to tax sheltered annuities and a deferred compensation plan.
