Medical Assistant

Job Description

We are seeking a Medical Assistant (MA) whose duties and responsibilities relate to patient care in the ambulatory clinic environment. The individual displays responsible behaviors, communicates effectively to others and functions as a member of the healthcare team. The MA functions under the direct supervision and authority of the physician when performing clinical tasks during patient care. The MA reports to the Clinical Supervisor and Clinic Manager, who are responsible for skill assessments, staff development, and orientation to the area’s policies and procedures, along with administrative supervision. The MA must demonstrate competency in all skills related to the performance of patient care. The MA maintains an inventory of examination/procedure room supplies, assists in the organization of efficient patient flow, and organizes the clinic environment to assure patient safety. The MA demonstrates problem-solving skills as they relate to patient care activities, provides guidance for and acts as a role model for Medical Assistants in the clinical area.


The MA must possess the necessary skills to assist the provider with the day-to-day activities of patient care. The MA must be able to perform phlebotomy, give injections, use equipment found in a medical setting, perform vitals, and assist the provider with procedures, as well document in the medical record and verify that the billing sheet has been completed for all procedures completed by the lab staff.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Complete Medicare Wellness Questionnaire as well as other questionnaires in EPIC and file all forms sent via MyChart to the medical record.
  • Assist Clinical RN with ED discharge calls when necessary.
  • Complete Prior-Authorizations for medications.
  • Provide friendly, courteous and confidential assistance to patients and their family members/representatives.
  • Follow HIPPA guidelines at all times.
  • Collect patient information and assessment data. Obtain and record patient’s vital signs: temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, weight and height. Reports assessment findings to practitioner, and records on appropriate documentation forms in a timely manner. Obtains additional data from patient and significant other based on initial data collection.
  • Performs chart review prior to clinic visit to obtain historical data, saves any forms patient has completed via MyChart, checks for metric gaps in care and need for Medicare Wellness Visits and informs providers. Documents all data in Epic.
  • Assists patients to exam room and prepares patients for examination and/or diagnostic procedures. Monitors patient status, recognizing and reporting abnormal findings or changes in condition.
  • Prepare examination or treatment areas before, during and after patient use.
  • Maintains and uses principles of aseptic technique and infection control when performing clinical duties and tasks.
  • Operates clinical equipment according to equipment procedure, as directed by physician (such as electrocardiograph, nebulizer, blood glucose meters, and oxygen equipment).
  • Recognizes emergency situations, implements emergency procedure according to clinic guidelines, administers first aid including CPR, and maintains emergency equipment and supplies.
  • Confirms and clarifies written orders prior to implementation of delegated tasks.
  • Prepares and administers medications, which include intradermal, subcutaneous, intramuscular and intravenous injections as directed by a physician.
  • Performs in-office point of care tests. Follows all approved NIPO guidelines unless directed otherwise by provider.
  • Provides lab services while phlebotomist is on break. Appropriately obtains and manages specimens, including labeling and laboratory pick up.
  • Performs quality controls for waived testing. Acts as a “trainer” for waived testing, and coordinates activities related to proficiency.
  • Assists physicians with examinations and procedures such as GYN exams. Chaperones for sensitive exams and records in Epic.
  • Stocks and maintains exam rooms and clinic areas with standard levels of supplies, medications, and equipment. Prepares list of needed supplies and medications for monthly order.
  • Performs skilled tasks such as venipuncture for the collection of blood specimens, suture removal and wound dressing changes as directed by the physician.
  • Documents tasks performed and nursing care data accurately in the medical record in Epic.
  • Assists patients in wheelchairs and stretchers with transfers to and from exam tables, procedure tables and scales utilizing proper body mechanics and safety measures.
  • Performs related and delegated tasks, which include retrieving and processing messages from the prescription refill line, taking and relaying messages, facilitating interaction between patient and provider, working with providers to assure smooth and efficient patient flow, and running errands.
  • Notifies manager and patients of wait times.
  • Participates in medical education of patients and families as directed by provider and provides patient instruction for medication administration, diagnostic tests, specimen collection and methods of health promotion and disease prevention.
  • Obtains and provides health information for patient use as requested by the physician.
  • Assists with orientation of new and/or agency staff members. Participates in the clinic's quality assurance programs and committees.
  • Ensures that needle s and potentially infectious waste are appropriately disposed and removed from the clinic and exam area according to the infection control guidelines.
  • Performs minor housekeeping tasks to keep clinic areas clean and safe.
  • Maintains Clorox and germicidal solutions in clinic for emergency cleanups, etc.
  • Checks clinic area and rooms for malfunctioning equipment and general maintenance problems on a regular basis. Reports findings to supervisor or arranges for repairs as required in the absence of the supervisor.
  • Participates in skill development and training through in-service programs to enhance knowledge level and to ensure mastery of patient care procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications
  • High School diploma or graduation equivalent.
  • Experience using EPIC preferred.


Additional Minimum Qualifications

  • Certification/Registration as a Medical Assistant (e.g. CMA, AAMA, RMA, AMT, NAHP) required. If not currently certified/registered, must become certified/ registered within 180 days (6 months) of the date of hire. Exam fees will be paid by the department. If a retest is required, associated fees are paid by the employee.
  • Current CPR certification by the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross required.
  • Must maintain MA and CPR certification/registration during the duration of employment in this position.
