Position Summary
The Major Gifts Officer is responsible for advancing the Mountaineer Food Bank’s mission and priorities through fundraising and managing donor relationships in our 48 county service area.
They will work with the Development team to plan and implement a strategic process for fundraising for both capital and operational needs, as well as, future support.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Individual & Corporate Donors
▪ Help feed West Virginia’s hungry through daily actions as a member of the Mountaineer
Food Bank development team
▪ Develop, manage and execute an aggressive and comprehensive program to generate support from individuals and corporate donors.
▪ Manage a portfolio of donors and prospects utilizing comprehensive databases to research capacity and propensity, segment current donors, qualify and disqualify prospects, develop cultivation strategies, and to upgrade gift levels.
▪ Resolve donor issues and respond to inquiries and suggestions in a timely and appropriate manner.
- Review all upcoming cause marketing campaigns with development team to ensure that input and back end servicing for the donor is understood, accurate, and recognition activities are executed.
- Manage personalization gift acknowledgement for a portfolio of middle level donors, annual recognition programs, and custom contacts including personal phone calls and handwritten notes.
- Track results of individual and corporate solicitations along with providing analysis and reporting
- Develop and implement planned giving marketing program, solicit and facilitate deferred gifts as appropriate.
- Research and identify prospective funding sources.
- Work with the Development team on special events, benefits, cause marketing, media events, check presentations and fund drives.
- Works collaboratively with Feeding America and other key national partners. Participates in key cause marketing calls, campaigns, conferences and meetings.
- Aid and support for additional fundraising activities as directed by Chief Development
- Officer.
- Work with and make fundraising calls, visits and meetings with the Chief Development
- Officer and the Development Committee on all matters related to fundraising.
- Identify, cultivate, and maintain personal, local, and national contacts with new major gift prospects from all constituencies and assemble a database on each through basic prospect research techniques.
- Maintain accurate donor records, provide regular progress reporting and stewardship with donors to ensure continued support.
- Implement and utilize a moves management continuum for new and existing donor portfolio.
- Cultivate potential and existing contributors.
- Assist in updating departmental SOP’s.
Communications
- Develop a written and verbal communication process for prospective donors with the
- Communications Officer.
- Create well written and effective solicitation letters, phone scripts, and proposals and assist with on-line grant requests.
▪ Develop strong working relationships with program staff to understand and articulate needs and case for support.
▪ Assist in formulation and execution of new events that fit the MFB brand with development team.
▪ Assist with direct mail campaigns, mailings, newsletters, bulk text and email campaigns
▪ Ability to organize and use market research.
Other
▪ Ability to work with volunteers as needed.
▪ Other duties as assigned by the Chief Development Officer.
EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of two years fundraising experience in the non-profit sector. Preferred to have
Bachelor’s Degree in a related field.
SKILLS:
▪ Superior Microsoft Office Skills.
▪ Superior relationship building and fundraising skills to strategize and carry out effective fundraising plans.
▪ Proficient in data analysis and donor management systems.
▪ Strong writing and oral communication skills.
▪ Strong editing skills.
▪ Strong personnel management techniques, adaptability, and experience in related field.
▪ Ability to keep records and organization.
▪ Team collaboration with other fundraising professionals as well as other employees/departments
▪ Excellent communication skills to professionally represent the Mountaineer Food Bank.
Physical, Mental, and Environmental Requirements:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to:
▪ Work in an office setting either remotely or at MFB with frequent travel to other locations in MFB’s footprint.
▪ Sit, stand, walk, bend, kneel, and use hands, arms, and legs for dexterity, balance and climbing stairs.
▪ Must be able to sit for prolonged periods of time.
▪ Occasionally required to operate office equipment and machines and recognize safety hazards in the workplace.
▪ Must be able to lift, carry, and balance objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
▪ Must be able to hear, see, read, and communicate verbally and in writing frequently with a wide range of people from divergent socio-economic and cultural backgrounds and origins.
▪ Demonstrate a professional demeanor in interactions with all MFB staff, agencies, donors, government officials and the general public.
This position is full-time salaried with benefits (health, life, dental, vision, PTO, paid holidays and 401k option). Full time salaried positions work an average of 38-45 hours per week. The position will frequently work weekends and evenings throughout the year.
