Research Technologist

Job Description

The Johns Hopkins University is seeking a Research Technologist with the Andrew Lab. The Andrew lab studies tissue specification, morphogenesis and specialization using the Drosophila embryonic salivary gland and other organs as models. Our research relies heavily on molecular biology, microscopy, and genome wide approaches to studying DNA binding and gene expression. We are specifically interested in the molecular and cellular events that mediate formation of organs that have the right size, architecture, and position in the embryo to maximize function. We also focus on the physiological specialization of different embryonic cell types.

This position is to identify and characterizing signaling pathways involved in the morphogenesis of the embryonic salivary gland. It will involve considerable Drosophila genetics, immunostaining, molecular biology, and microscopy. It is a fully supervised position, where experiments will be done in collaboration with and under the direction of a senior graduate student in the lab.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Collecting, fixing and immunostaining embryos.
  • Fly crosses to balance mutations or create doubly mutant lines.
  • DNA analysis to characterize molecular lesions associated with mutant phenotypes.
  • DNA cloning to create transgenic lines.
  • As necessary, transferring lab fly stocks.
  • Pouring apple juice caps for embryo collections.
  • Making solutions.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience working with DNA.
  • Knowledgeable working with Drosophila crosses and immunostaining Drosophila embryos.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience.
